Can You Charge Suica With a Credit Card?
Yes, if your Suica is on an iPhone. You can add money to a Suica in Apple Wallet, or to JR East's Welcome Suica Mobile app, using a credit card you've added to Apple Pay.
A physical Suica or Welcome Suica card is different. JR East says Welcome Suica can't be charged with a credit card and is topped up with cash at ticket machines and fare adjustment machines.
What Are the Ways to Charge a Suica Card?
Suica in Apple Wallet
Open the Wallet app, tap your Suica card, tap Add Money, choose an amount, then pick the card to pay with and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. You can also create a new Suica in Wallet and load money onto it when you add it.
Welcome Suica Mobile App
JR East launched Welcome Suica Mobile for iPhone in March 2025 for visitors to Japan. You top up the stored balance with a credit card registered to Apple Pay, up to a maximum balance of 20,000 yen.
Physical Suica or Welcome Suica Card
Physical cards are charged with cash at ticket vending machines and fare adjustment machines in stations, up to 20,000 yen for Welcome Suica. Seven Bank ATMs are another cash option.

- Add money: In Wallet, tap your Suica, then Add Money. In Welcome Suica Mobile, follow the in-app charge steps.
- Plan around maintenance hours: Some Suica functions in Wallet, including adding money, can be unavailable late at night Japan time, so top up before you head out.
If you transfer a physical Suica to Apple Wallet, the physical card stops working and its balance moves to your iPhone.

A top-up is a normal charge on your card, so it doesn't affect your score directly. It does add to your balance, which affects your credit utilization until you pay it off.
