The card earns 2 AAdvantage® miles per $1 on eligible American Airlines purchases, at restaurants (including takeout), and at gas stations, plus 1 mile per $1 on other purchases. You also earn 1 Loyalty Point for every eligible AAdvantage® mile earned from purchases.

- Preferred boarding for you and up to four companions on the same reservation
- 25% savings on inflight food and beverage purchases on American Airlines flights

Sapphire Reserve vs. Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select: Head to Head

Annual Fee
The Sapphire Reserve costs $795 a year, while the Citi card costs $99 after a free first year. The Reserve only makes sense if you will use enough of its credits and lounge access to offset the difference.
Earning
For American Airlines purchases, the Citi card earns 2 miles per $1 plus Loyalty Points. The Reserve earns 4x on flights booked directly with airlines, including American, and 3x on dining, but it earns no Loyalty Points.
Redemption Flexibility
The Reserve wins here. Chase lists 10 airline and four hotel transfer partners, including United MileagePlus®, the British Airways Club, World of Hyatt®, and Marriott Bonvoy™. AAdvantage® miles are tied to American Airlines and its partners.
American Airlines Perks
The Citi card wins. Free checked bags, preferred boarding, and inflight savings are benefits the Reserve does not offer.
Lounges and Protections
The Reserve includes Chase Sapphire Lounges and Priority Pass™ access plus a broad set of travel protections. The Citi card has no lounge access, so check its Guide to Benefits for the protections it does include.
Can You Use Both Cards Together?

Yes, and many American Airlines flyers do. You could use the Citi card on American purchases to earn miles and Loyalty Points and get the bag and boarding perks, then use the Reserve for dining, other travel, and everyday spending to earn transferable Chase points.
British Airways and American Airlines are both oneworld® members, so points transferred to the British Airways Club can be used for award flights on partner airlines such as American. Award pricing varies by route, so compare before you transfer, since Chase says transfers are final. Our guide to transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards® points walks through the steps.
Before you add a card, Kudos Test Drive shows what it would earn based on the spending you enter. With Kudos Premium, the Benefits Tracker shows which Sapphire Reserve credits you've used, and Kudos automatically activates your Chase and Citi card offers.
Who Should Choose the Chase Sapphire Reserve?
- You travel often and fly more than one airline.
- You want points you can transfer to airline and hotel programs.
- You will use lounge access and the $300 annual travel credit.
- You value primary rental car coverage and trip protections.
Our Chase Sapphire Reserve review covers each benefit in more detail.
Who Should Choose the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select?
- You fly American Airlines and check bags on domestic trips.
- You often travel with companions on the same reservation.
- You want Loyalty Points toward AAdvantage® status from everyday spending.
- You prefer a low annual fee over premium perks like lounge access.
Alternatives to Consider
If neither card fits, two cards with $95 annual fees offer transferable points at a lower cost.
- The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns Chase points you can transfer to the same partners as the Reserve.
- The Citi Strata Premier® Card earns Citi ThankYou® Points, and Citi lists American Airlines among its transfer partners.

Tips for Application Success

Before You Apply
- Check your credit. Both cards are generally aimed at applicants with good to excellent credit, and Kudos shows your approval odds before you apply.
- Know Chase's rules. Chase says the new cardmember bonus may not be available if you've had the card or its bonus before, and it may consider how many cards you've opened. Read about the Chase 5/24 rule.
- Know Citi's rule. Citi's bonus isn't available if you received a new account bonus on this card in the past 48 months.
Application Strategy
- Compare current welcome offers. Both issuers change their offers, so check the spending requirement and timeframe before you apply.
- Time your application. Apply before a large planned purchase so you can meet a spending requirement with normal spending.
