More:

Capital One Venture X Rewards vs. United Explorer

Earning

The Explorer earns the most on United purchases and adds 2x on dining and hotels booked direct, but only 1x elsewhere. The Venture X earns 2X miles on every purchase and much more on travel booked through Capital One Travel.

Redemption

United℠ Explorer Card: Miles go into your MileagePlus account for award flights on United and its partners. Cardholders can also earn a 10,000-mile award flight discount after spending $20,000 in a calendar year.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card: Miles can be redeemed for travel, used to cover eligible travel purchases, or transferred to more than 15 travel loyalty programs. Miles won't expire for the life of the account.

Travel Perks

  • Lounges: Venture X primary cardholders can access Capital One Lounge and Landing locations and more than 1,300 Priority Pass lounges after enrolling. Guest access rules can change, so check the current terms. The Explorer includes two United Club one-time passes each year.
  • Airline perks: The Explorer gives a free first standard checked bag to you and one companion on the same reservation on United flights, plus Group 2 boarding. The Venture X doesn't include airline-specific perks.
  • Security screening: Both cards offer a statement credit of up to $120 for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck®. The Explorer's credit also covers NEXUS and is available once every four years.
  • Car rentals: The Venture X includes a complimentary Hertz® Gold+™ status upgrade. The Explorer includes primary auto rental coverage.
  • Foreign transaction fees: Neither card charges them.

Credits

The Explorer offers partner credits, including up to $60 a year in rideshare credits ($5 a month, enrollment required), up to $120 a year in Instacart credits ($10 a month), and up to $100 a year with JSX. The Venture X's main credits are the $300 annual Capital One Travel credit and the 10,000 anniversary miles.

Who Should Choose the United Explorer?

The United Explorer suits travelers who fly United several times a year, especially with a companion who checks a bag. Free bags, priority boarding, and Club passes can help offset the $150 annual fee that starts in year two.

It also fits travelers who want primary auto rental coverage and trip cancellation coverage of up to $1,500 per covered traveler and $6,000 per trip.

Who Should Choose the Capital One Venture X Rewards?

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card fits frequent travelers who will book through Capital One Travel to use the $300 annual credit and earn 5X to 10X miles. Add the 10,000 anniversary miles and lounge access, and the annual fee is easier to justify for people who travel often.

It's also a better match if you fly several airlines and want miles you can transfer to different programs.

Alternatives to Consider

If you want flexible miles at a lower annual fee, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card earns 2X miles on every purchase and 5X miles on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, for $95 a year (See Rates & Fees).

If you fly United but want transferable points, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 5x on Chase Travel℠ purchases, 3x on dining, and 2x on other travel, and points can transfer to United MileagePlus. Its annual fee is $95.

How Can Kudos Help You Compare?

With Kudos Test Drive, you can see what you'd earn with either card before you apply, based on the spending you enter. Kudos also shows your approval odds for each card.

Once you carry a card with several credits, Kudos Premium includes a Benefits Tracker that shows what you've used and what's still waiting on each card, so credits like the Explorer's monthly rideshare and Instacart credits don't go unused.

Tips for Application Success

Before You Apply

  • Check your credit: Both cards generally go to applicants with good to excellent credit.
  • Plan your spending: Make sure you can meet any welcome offer spending requirement within the time frame.
  • Review bonus rules: The Explorer's new cardmember bonus isn't available if you're a current cardmember or received it in the past 24 months.

Application Strategy

  • Pace your applications: Several new cards in a short period can hurt your approval odds.
  • Match the card to your habits: The Venture X pays off most if you'll book through Capital One Travel, while the Explorer pays off if you fly United.

Our Methodology

We evaluate nearly 3,000 credit cards across the U.S. market, far more than the roughly 150 cards commonly featured on sites that focus only on products tied to affiliate commissions. Our goal is to give you a complete, unbiased view of the market so you can decide with confidence.

Our editorial team checks card details against issuer sources. You can also explore the full dataset yourself in Kudos Card Explorer, which includes thousands of cards, more than 95% of which do not pay us commissions.
