Discover Card Moving to Capital One: What to Do Now
July 1, 2025

If you carry a Discover credit card, some changes are headed your way. As part of a multibillion-dollar merger, Discover accounts are gradually moving over to Capital One's systems, with many cardholders being told to expect the shift as soon as late July 2026. The transition is happening in waves rather than all at once, so not everyone will see the same timeline — but it's worth knowing what to expect either way.
Here's what's actually changing, what's staying the same, and what to do before your account moves.
What's Actually Changing
The core shift is behind the scenes: Discover accounts are being folded into Capital One's servicing systems. That means the Discover website and mobile app will eventually stop being the place you manage your account — Capital One's app and site take over instead. The Discover brand itself isn't disappearing; new cards will still be marketed under the Discover name, but the infrastructure running the accounts belongs to Capital One going forward.
Timeline: When Your Card Moves
Migration is rolling out in waves through 2026 and into 2027, and Capital One hasn't published a full schedule of which cards move first. If you've received a specific date from Discover or Capital One directly, that's the most reliable information you'll get — general guidance only goes so far when the rollout isn't uniform across all accounts.
What Stays the Same
A few of the most important details aren't changing. Your card's 16-digit number stays the same, so there's no new plastic to activate for primary cardholders. Product names, annual fees, interest rates, and credit limits are also expected to remain as they are today, and rewards earning rates and redemption options are staying largely consistent. The migration itself isn't reported to credit bureaus as a new account, so it shouldn't reset your account's age on your credit file.
Rewards Redemption Changes to Know
Not everything carries over exactly as-is. A couple of redemption features are going away or shifting: rewards will no longer be applicable toward your minimum monthly payment (though you can still apply them as a statement credit), and gift card redemptions will come with a higher minimum threshold than before. If you use Apple Pay's rewards-based payment feature or have recurring subscriptions tied to Apple Pay, those may also be disrupted during the transition and are worth double-checking once your account moves.
New Perks Discover Cardholders Are Gaining
On the upside, some Discover cardholders will pick up access to features that weren't previously available, including Capital One's travel booking portal, its entertainment ticketing platform, and its shopping rewards program. Anyone who used Discover's credit monitoring tools will move over to Capital One's equivalent tracking feature, and some card types will gain broader redemption flexibility than they had before.
Steps to Take Before Your Card Migrates
A little prep goes a long way here. Make sure your contact information — address, phone number, and email — is current in your Discover account, since that's what carries over to Capital One. It's also worth downloading the Capital One app ahead of time so you're ready when account access switches over, confirming your current payment due date in case it shifts slightly, and double-checking any autopay settings once the migration completes to make sure payments aren't interrupted. If you have an authorized user or joint account holder on your card, keep in mind they'll receive a new card with its own number, mailed to the primary cardholder.
What This Means If You're Weighing Discover vs. Capital One Now
If you're shopping for a new card right now, it's worth remembering that Discover and Capital One products are effectively converging on the same back-end systems, even though the cards themselves still have distinct rewards structures. Kudos' review of the Discover it Cash Back Card and Kudos' guide to Capital One Miles can help you compare what each brand still offers on its own terms, regardless of which company is running the servicing behind the scenes.
Whichever card you carry through the transition, Kudos can help you keep track of your rewards and make sure you're using the right card for every purchase while the migration plays out.
