Does 407 ETR Report to Credit Bureaus?

Quick Answer
407 ETR doesn't publish a policy on reporting regular toll payments to credit bureaus, so paying on time isn't likely to build your credit. Unpaid bills are a different story.
407 ETR says it uses internal collectors, third-party collection agencies, courts, and licence plate denial to collect overdue balances. Its own Collections Code of Conduct warns that unpaid debts can harm your credit rating.
407 ETR and Your Credit
Highway 407 ETR is an all-electronic toll highway in Ontario, Canada, running from the QEW in Burlington to Brock Road. There are no toll booths, and 407 ETR detects each vehicle by transponder signal or licence plate photo.
A toll account isn't a loan or credit line, so there is normally nothing to report while your bill is paid. The credit risk comes from overdue balances that move into collections.
Does 407 ETR Report to Credit Bureaus?
407 ETR doesn't say that it reports payment history directly. Its Collections Code of Conduct describes what happens when a bill goes unpaid:
- Early contact: As early as 30 to 60 days after billing, you can expect to hear from 407 ETR about the unpaid account.
- Interest: If an invoice isn't paid within 37 days, interest is applied to the overdue balance.
- Collection agency: An overdue account may be referred to a collection agency, and a collection fee may be added.
- Court action: 407 ETR may take legal action, which the company notes can lead to wage garnishment, asset seizure, and harm to your credit rating.
Who Would Report 407 ETR Debt?
If your account goes to a collection agency, that agency may report it to Canada's two main credit bureaus:
- Equifax Canada
- TransUnion Canada
When Does 407 ETR Send Accounts to Collections?
407 ETR doesn't publish a fixed number of days before an account goes to a collection agency. It does say that collections and licence plate denial can be used when a balance is older than 90 days.
Under its code, amounts in a Notice of Failure to Pay can be sent to plate denial no sooner than 90 days after the first notice. Collections and plate denial can run separately or at the same time, and interest keeps applying until the balance is paid.
How Unpaid Tolls Can Affect Your Credit
No Positive Impact From On-Time Payments
Since 407 ETR doesn't say it reports regular payments, paying your bill on time likely won't add positive history to your credit file. It does keep you clear of interest, fees, and plate denial.
Potential Negatives
- A collection account is negative information that can lower your credit score.
- Court judgments can lead to wage garnishment or asset seizure, according to 407 ETR.
- Licence plate denial means the Ontario Registrar of Motor Vehicles can refuse to renew your plates or issue new ones until the debt is paid.
Tips for Managing Your 407 ETR Bill
- Pay when the bill arrives. 407 ETR says bills are due on the day they are sent.
- Set up pre-authorized debit. 407 ETR offers pre-authorized debit from your bank account through My Account.
- Keep your address current. Notices go to the address on file with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, and drivers must update the MTO within 6 days of moving.
- Request a reprint if a bill goes missing. You are still responsible for a lost bill, so call 407 ETR for a copy.
- Ask about help early. 407 ETR offers financial assistance programs, including a Route Relief Program based on household size and income, and a Financial Hardship Program for some customers in plate denial.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can 407 ETR affect my credit score?
Not through regular payments. An unpaid balance that goes to a collection agency or court can hurt your credit rating.
What is 407 ETR licence plate denial?
407 ETR can ask the Ontario Registrar of Motor Vehicles to deny the renewal of your plates or the issuance of new plates while toll amounts are owed. It can apply no sooner than 90 days after the first notice.
Can I dispute a 407 ETR bill?
Yes. 407 ETR has a dispute process, and it says it instructs its collection agency to stop activity while a dispute is under review. Customers can also take a dispute to an Ombudsman.
