Grocery and Gas Cash Back Cards in 2026: The Caps Matter More Than the Rate
July 1, 2025

Every grocery and gas cash back card leads with a percentage. Almost none of them lead with the cap. The cap is what determines what you actually earn.
Here's the 2026 landscape with the limits put next to the rates.

The Pattern
High rates come with caps. Uncapped earning comes at lower rates. Which one wins depends entirely on your spending volume, and the crossover point is usually lower than people expect.
Caps also make single-card strategies inefficient. If your grocery card caps at $6,000 a year and you spend $10,000, the last $4,000 needs a different card. A flat-rate 2% card turns $40 of missed rewards into $80.
Kudos recommends which of your cards to use at each checkout and tracks the cash back you've earned, so a filled-up bonus category doesn't quietly cost you the rest of the year.
Two Habits that Fix Most of This
- Know your cap dates. Track roughly when each category cap will fill so you can switch cards instead of coasting at 1%.
- Keep a flat-rate card as the overflow. It exists to catch spend after the bonus categories are exhausted.
