Can You Pay a Pawnshop Loan With a Credit Card?

Can You Pay a Pawnshop Loan With a Credit Card?

Sometimes, but it depends on the pawnshop. Payment policies vary by company and even by store, and many shops steer pawn payments toward cash or debit cards, so call your store before you go.

At EZPAWN, for example, the online EZ+ app asks for debit card details to extend a pawn, and paying off a pawn to get your item back has to be done in the store.

How Do Pawn Loan Payments Work?

A pawn loan is backed by an item you leave with the shop. When the loan is due, you can pay it in full and redeem your item, or you may be able to pay a fee to extend or renew it.

Using EZPAWN as an example, its help center lists three ways to pay: in the store, by phone where available, or online through the EZ+ web app. Phone and online payments are only for extensions, and an extension payment does not reduce the original amount you owe.

Kudos Tip

Should You Pay a Pawnshop Loan With a Credit Card?

Possible Benefits

  • Keep your item: Paying on time lets you redeem your collateral before the shop can keep it.
  • More time to pay: If the charge posts as a purchase and you pay your statement in full, you get until your card's due date.
  • Rewards: A purchase on a rewards card may earn points or cash back.

Possible Costs

  • Interest: If you carry the balance, card interest adds to what the pawn loan already cost you.
  • Cash advance treatment: If the shop or your issuer treats the payment as a cash advance, expect an upfront fee, a higher APR, and no grace period.
  • Processing fees: Some shops may add a surcharge for card payments, so ask before you pay.

How to Pay a Pawnshop Loan With a Credit Card

  1. Call your store: Ask whether it accepts credit cards for pawn payoffs or extensions, and whether there's a fee.
  2. Check your card's terms: Look up how your issuer handles the charge and what your purchase and cash advance APRs are.
  3. Compare the costs: Weigh the pawn loan's remaining fees against what you'd pay in card interest if you can't clear the balance right away.
  4. Pay and plan the payoff: Make the payment at the store and set a plan to pay off the card balance quickly.

If you're shopping for a new card first, Kudos Card Explorer lets you filter thousands of cards by welcome bonus, annual fee, and more, and Kudos shows your approval odds before you apply.

How Does a Pawn Loan Affect Your Credit Score?

A pawn loan itself usually doesn't touch your credit. EZPAWN says it doesn't check your credit for a pawn, and if you don't repay, you forfeit the item with no negative reporting to any credit agencies.

Paying with a credit card changes that, because the balance now sits on a credit account:

  • Credit utilization: A large charge can raise your utilization and lower your score until you pay it down.
  • Payment history: Late card payments are reported to the credit bureaus and can hurt your score.
  • More debt: You're swapping a loan with no credit consequences for one that has them.

What Are Other Ways to Pay a Pawnshop Loan?

Cash or Debit in the Store

Paying in person with cash or a debit card is the most widely accepted option. It also avoids card interest and any card surcharge.

Extend or Renew the Loan

If you can't pay the full amount yet, many shops let you pay a fee to extend the due date. This keeps your item from being forfeited, but it adds to the total cost and doesn't lower what you owe.

Let the Item Go

You're generally not obligated to repay a pawn loan. If you don't, you lose the item, but at shops like EZPAWN it won't be reported to the credit bureaus.

How Do You Choose the Right Card?

If you do pay with a card, a low ongoing APR or a long intro APR on purchases matters more than rewards, since interest can quickly outweigh any points you earn. Make sure the card treats the charge as a purchase, not a cash advance.

Once you have the right card, the free Kudos extension recommends the best card in your wallet at online checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Pawnshops Accept Credit Cards for Loan Payments?

Some do and some don't, and policies can vary by store. Call ahead and ask about any card processing fee.

Can I Pay a Pawn Loan Online?

Some chains allow it for extensions. EZPAWN's EZ+ app accepts debit card payments for extensions, but a full payoff must be made in the store.

Does a Pawn Loan Show Up on My Credit Report?

Usually not. EZPAWN says it doesn't run a credit check and doesn't report forfeited pawns to credit agencies. A credit card balance used to pay the loan does show up, though.

What Happens if I Don't Repay a Pawn Loan?

You forfeit the item you pawned. At EZPAWN, there's no further recourse and no negative credit reporting.
