Can You Pay a Verizon Bill With a Credit Card?

Yes, but most credit cards do not qualify for Verizon's Auto Pay discount.

Can You Pay a Verizon Bill With a Credit Card?

Yes. Verizon accepts credit cards, debit cards, and bank accounts for mobile bill payments, and Verizon says there is no charge to pay through My Verizon, at a Verizon store, or by dialing #PMT from your phone.

The catch is the Auto Pay discount. Verizon's Auto Pay FAQ says you must enroll in Auto Pay and paper-free billing using a bank account or the Verizon Visa® Card to get the discount. Paying with any other credit card means giving it up.

The information for the Verizon Visa® Card has been collected independently by Kudos. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Should You Pay Your Verizon Bill With a Credit Card?

Benefits

  • Rewards: You earn your card's rate on a bill you pay every month.
  • Cell phone protection: Some cards include coverage for your phone when you pay your monthly wireless bill with the card. Our guide to the best credit cards for cell phone protection compares them.
  • Payment timing: You have until your card's due date to pay the balance.

Drawbacks

  • Lost Auto Pay discount: Only a bank account or the Verizon Visa® Card qualifies for the discount.
  • Discount removal on one-time card payments: Verizon says if you get the discount and make a one-time payment online or in the app with a credit card, the removed discount shows up as a charge on your next bill.
  • Interest: Carrying the balance costs far more than any rewards you earn.

Kudos Tip

Is the Auto Pay Discount Worth More Than Card Rewards?

Verizon says the Auto Pay and paper-free billing discount is up to $10 off per line on select unlimited plans and up to $5 per line on other eligible plans.

For most people, the discount wins. To match a $10 monthly discount with a card that earns 2% cash back, you would need to charge $500 a month for that line. A $5 discount takes $250 a month to match.

Calculation formulated by Kudos, based on dividing Verizon's maximum per-line Auto Pay discount by a 2% cash back rate.

Paying by card can still make sense if your plan does not qualify for a discount, or if your card's cell phone protection matters more to you than the savings.

How to Pay a Verizon Bill With a Credit Card

  1. Sign in to My Verizon. Use the website or app. Verizon also lets you pay without signing in by using your account number and ZIP code.
  2. Add your card as a payment method. You can add or update payment methods in My Verizon.
  3. Make the payment. Choose the card and confirm the amount. Paying through My Verizon, in a store, or with #PMT is free, while paying through a Customer Service agent carries a $10 Agent Assistance Fee.
  4. Decide on Auto Pay. You can set up Auto Pay with a credit card, but only a bank account or the Verizon Visa® Card earns the discount.

Does Paying Verizon With a Credit Card Affect Your Credit?

  • Utilization: Your phone bill adds to your card balance, so pay before your statement closes if you want a lower balance reported.
  • Payment history: Paying your card on time builds positive history, which makes up 35% of a FICO® Score according to myFICO.
  • Building credit: A predictable monthly bill paid in full can help if you are new to credit.

Other Ways to Pay a Verizon Bill

Verizon's bill payment FAQ lists several options:

  • Bank account: Add it in My Verizon, including through the Online Banking option powered by Trustly.
  • Debit card: Accepted for payments. Verizon says debit card Auto Pay enrollments made before February 14, 2024, keep the discount.
  • Cash: At a Verizon store or at CheckFreePay and Western Union locations, which may charge up to $3.
  • Mail: Check or money order. Verizon charges a returned payment fee if a check is returned.

Which Credit Card Should You Use for Your Verizon Bill?

If you decide to pay by card, a flat-rate card is a simple choice, and a card with cell phone protection adds coverage for your device. The Citi Double Cash® Card earns 2% cash back on purchases (1% when you buy and 1% as you pay) with a $0 annual fee.
