Quick Answer
Sometimes. Affirm accepts credit cards for down payments, one-time payments, and AutoPay on eligible plans, such as Pay in 4. Credit cards can't be used on interest-bearing plans, and Affirm no longer accepts credit cards issued by Capital One, Chase, Discover, or Citi.
Which Affirm Plans Accept Credit Cards?
Affirm's rule is simple: credit cards are available only for eligible plans and can't be used on interest-bearing plans. If a credit card option doesn't appear when you pay, it isn't available for that plan.
Card issuer matters too. Affirm doesn't accept credit cards from Capital One, Chase, Discover, or Citi, with the Discover and Citi restrictions taking effect on August 12, 2026. Debit cards and bank accounts from those banks still work.
Should You Pay Affirm With a Credit Card?
Benefits
- Rewards: If your card's issuer codes the payment as a purchase, it can earn your card's usual rewards.
- Timing: A card can cover a payment when your bank balance is low, as long as you pay the card off.
Costs
- Interest: Carrying a card balance can turn a 0% APR Pay in 4 plan into high-interest debt.
- Possible cash advance treatment: Some issuers may treat payments to a lender as a cash advance. Check your card's terms first.
- Utilization: The payment adds to your card balance until you pay it off.
How to Pay Affirm With a Credit Card
- Check your plan: Confirm your plan isn't interest-bearing. Pay in 4 plans are 0% APR.
- Check your card: Use a credit card from an issuer Affirm still accepts.
- Add the card: In the Affirm app or website, add the card as a payment method and select it for a one-time payment or AutoPay.
- Turn on AutoPay early: Affirm asks you to enable AutoPay at least three days before your due date. AutoPay is available on monthly and biweekly plans, not plans with one payment due within 30 days.
Impact on Your Credit Score
- Affirm reporting: Affirm reports payment plans and payment activity, including on-time, late, and missed payments, to Experian, and plans started on or after May 1, 2025, are also reported to TransUnion.
- Checking eligibility: Affirm says checking your purchasing power won't affect your credit score.
- Card utilization: Paying with a card raises your card balance, which can affect your score until it's paid. See how to lower your utilization rate.
Other Ways to Pay Affirm
Affirm also accepts debit cards and bank accounts (ACH) for one-time and recurring payments, an Affirm Money account, Apple Pay for one-time payments, and checks. Prepaid cards may work on some plans.
Affirm doesn't charge late fees, but a missed payment can still affect your credit history and your ability to use Affirm. For more on how BNPL compares with card rewards, read BNPL vs. credit card rewards or our Affirm Card review.
Choose the Right Card for Everyday Spending
Because many popular issuers can't be used with Affirm, a card may earn you more on the original purchase than on the repayment. You can compare cards in Kudos Explore to find one that fits how you spend.
