Can You Pay Ally Auto With a Credit Card?
Not through Ally's own online payment options. Ally's payment FAQ says you can pay online or in the Ally app from a checking or savings account, and it lists a debit card, not a credit card, for one-time online card payments through the third-party service CheckFreePay.
Ally says it does not charge a fee to make a payment, but the third-party services it lists do. If you want to use a credit card, you would need an outside bill-pay service, and the fees usually outweigh the rewards.
How Can You Make an Ally Auto Payment?
According to Ally, these are your options:
| Method | How it works | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Ally.com or the Ally app | Pay from a checking or savings account, or enroll in Auto Pay | No Ally fee |
| Debit card through CheckFreePay | One-time online payment with your vehicle account number, debit card, and ZIP code | $3.75 charged by CheckFreePay |
| Phone through ACI Pay | Call 1-888-631-8930 with your bank account or card number | $4 charged by ACI Pay |
| Your bank's bill pay | Set up Ally as a payee with your vehicle account number | Depends on your bank |
| Payment Processing Center, P.O. Box 71119, Charlotte, NC 28272-1119 | Postage | |
| MoneyGram or Western Union Quick Collect® | In-person one-time payment | Charged by the provider |
| Text | Available to eligible customers | No Ally fee; carrier rates may apply |
Fees and options can change, so confirm them in your Ally account before you pay.
Can You Use a Third-Party Service to Pay Ally With a Credit Card?
Some bill-pay services charge your credit card and then send the payment to your lender by check or bank transfer. Ally does not list these services as payment options, so check the provider's terms, fees, and processing time before you rely on one.
Do the math first. If a service charges a percentage fee that is higher than your card's rewards rate, you lose money on every payment. Also allow extra time so the payment reaches Ally before your due date.
Should You Pay a Car Loan With a Credit Card?
Possible Benefits
- You may earn card rewards, or count the payment toward a new card's welcome bonus spending requirement, if the payment posts as a purchase.
- It can cover a payment in a short-term cash crunch.
Costs and Risks
- Third-party processing fees often cancel out the rewards.
- If you carry the balance, you replace a lower auto loan rate with a much higher credit card APR.
- A large monthly charge can raise your credit utilization.
For most borrowers, paying Ally directly from a bank account is the cheapest option.
How Paying a Car Loan by Card Can Affect Your Credit
- Credit utilization: Amounts owed make up 30% of a FICO® Score according to myFICO. Moving a car payment onto a card raises your card balance.
- Payment history: Payment history makes up 35% of a FICO® Score. Missing either your loan payment or your card payment can hurt your score.

Better Ways to Save on Your Ally Auto Loan
Enroll in Auto Pay
Ally Auto Pay withdraws your monthly payment from your checking or savings account on the day you choose, which helps you avoid late payments. Check your contract for how late fees are assessed.
Pay Extra Toward Principal
Ally says that when you pay more than the amount due online, you can choose to apply the extra to the amount financed or to future payments. Paying down principal reduces the interest you pay over the life of the loan.
Use Your Card Where It Earns More
Instead of forcing your car payment onto a card, earn rewards on car costs that accept cards directly, such as gas, insurance, and maintenance. Kudos keeps track of the cards in your wallet and recommends the one that earns the most when you shop online, and the Kudos Explore tool helps you compare cards before you apply.
