Can You Pay Eversource With a Credit Card?
Yes, for one-time payments. Eversource's payment page says you can pay with its Speedpay credit card payment system without signing in. Speedpay, an ACI Worldwide company, processes Eversource payments made with a credit, debit, or ATM card.
You cannot put a credit card on Eversource Auto Pay. Eversource says Auto Pay payments are deducted from your bank account and that Auto Pay is not available by credit card, so each card payment has to be made manually.
Should You Pay Eversource With a Credit Card?
Benefits
- Rewards: You can earn cash back, points, or miles on a bill you have to pay anyway.
- Timing: You get until your card's due date to pay the balance, which can help smooth out a high winter or summer bill.
- One statement: Your utility bill shows up alongside your other card spending.
Drawbacks
- Possible fees: A convenience fee may apply to card payments, and any fee can cancel out your rewards.
- No autopay: Because Auto Pay only works with a bank account, you need to remember to pay by card every month.
- Interest: Carrying the balance at a typical card APR costs far more than you will earn in rewards.
How to Pay Eversource With a Credit Card
- Have your account number ready. Speedpay's guest checkout asks for your Eversource account number and the ZIP code on your billing address.
- Go to Eversource's payment page. Choose Guest Pay to use Speedpay without signing in, or sign in to your Eversource account or mobile app.
- Choose the right card. Use the card that earns the most on utility payments. If you are not sure which one that is, Kudos can help you compare the cards in your wallet.
- Review any fee before you submit. Check the payment summary for a convenience fee and compare it to the rewards you will earn.
- Save your confirmation. Keep the confirmation number until the payment shows on your Eversource account.
Does Eversource Charge a Fee for Credit Card Payments?
It depends on your account. Eversource's website does not publish a single card fee for every customer, and card payment fees have varied by state and account type over the years. Check the Speedpay payment summary before you confirm, since that is where any fee will appear.
A quick way to decide: on a $150 bill, a card earning 2% cash back returns $3. Any fee higher than that means you lose money by paying with a card, unless you need the extra time to pay.
Calculation formulated by Kudos, based on a hypothetical $150 monthly bill multiplied by a 2% cash back rate.
Does Paying a Utility Bill by Credit Card Affect Your Credit?
- Utilization: Adding a utility bill raises your card balance. Paying before your statement closes keeps the reported balance lower.
- Payment history: Paying your card on time builds positive payment history, which makes up 35% of a FICO® Score according to myFICO.
- Debt risk: If you carry the balance, interest makes your utility bill more expensive every month.
