Can You Pay a Gym Membership With a Credit Card?

Can You Pay for a Gym Membership With a Credit Card?
Yes. Most gyms accept credit cards for monthly or annual memberships, and many prefer a card on file for autopay. With the right card, that recurring charge can earn bonus rewards instead of the 1% a basic card pays.
A few cards reward gym spending directly. The U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card lets you pick gyms and fitness centers as a 5% category, the World of Hyatt Credit Card earns bonus points on gym memberships, and The Platinum Card® from American Express offers an Equinox credit.
Should You Pay Your Gym Membership With a Credit Card?

The case for it: A recurring charge earns rewards without any change to your spending. Credit cards also let you dispute a charge if a gym keeps billing you after you cancel, and a membership can count toward a new card's welcome offer spending requirement.
For example, a $60 monthly membership on a card earning 5% in that category returns $36 a year.
Calculation formulated by Kudos, based on $60 per month for 12 months at 5% cash back, within the U.S. Bank Cash+ quarterly cap.
The risks: If you carry a balance, interest will erase those rewards quickly. Some gyms also add a surcharge for card payments, and autopay makes it easy to keep paying for a membership you no longer use.
How Do Gym Charges Code for Rewards?
Card bonus categories depend on how a merchant is classified, not on what you bought. A membership billed by a gym or fitness center usually codes as a gym, which is what cards like Cash+ and World of Hyatt reward.
Related purchases often code differently. Boutique studio class packs, personal training billed by a separate business, equipment from sporting goods stores, and athletic apparel may not count, so check your first statement to see how your gym codes.

How to Set Up Credit Card Payments for Your Gym
- Check your gym's payment policy. Ask which card networks it accepts and whether it adds a surcharge for credit cards.
- Pick the card that earns the most. If you use Cash+, select gyms/fitness centers as a 5% category before the quarter starts.
- Turn on autopay. Add your card in the gym's member portal or at the front desk so you never miss a payment.
- Check your first statement. Confirm the charge earned the bonus rate. If it didn't, move it to a better card.
- Review once a year. Your gym, your spending, and card terms can all change.
Does Paying a Gym With a Credit Card Affect Your Credit Score?
A gym charge adds a little to your balance, which slightly raises your credit utilization until you pay it off. For most people, a monthly membership is small compared with their credit limit.
Payment history is the biggest factor in your score, so a recurring charge you pay in full every month builds a steady record of on-time payments. The risk is carrying a balance or missing a payment.
Alternative Ways to Pay Your Gym Membership
- Bank account (ACH): Most gyms accept direct debit. You avoid card surcharges but give up rewards and card dispute rights.
- Debit card: A debit card avoids interest and is a reasonable fallback if your gym charges a credit card surcharge.
- Annual prepayment: Some gyms discount annual memberships paid up front. Compare that discount with the rewards you'd earn monthly.
- Employer wellness benefits: Some employers reimburse part of a gym membership. Pay with a rewards card, then submit for reimbursement.
Tips to Maximize Gym Membership Rewards

- Use a category card, not your catch-all card. A card earning 1% on everything leaves rewards behind compared with a 5% gym category.
- Watch the Cash+ cap. The 5% rate covers your first $2,000 in combined purchases each quarter across both 5% categories, then drops to 1%.
- Look for card-linked offers. Issuers sometimes run offers for fitness brands that add a statement credit on top of your regular rewards.
- Time big equipment purchases. Peloton purchases over $150 earn the Sapphire bonus through December 31, 2027.
Kudos can help with each of these. The free Kudos browser extension recommends the card in your wallet that earns the most at checkout, and Kudos Premium automatically activates card-linked offers from Amex, Chase, Citi, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, and its Benefits Tracker helps you keep tabs on credits like the Equinox credit.
Who Should Use a Credit Card for a Gym Membership?
A strong fit if: You pay your card in full every month and your gym doesn't add a card surcharge. You'll earn rewards on a bill you pay anyway.
A weaker fit if: You sometimes carry a balance, or your gym's surcharge is higher than your card's reward rate. In those cases, ACH or a debit card is usually cheaper.
