Can You Pay MOHELA With a Credit Card?

Quick Answer
No. MOHELA doesn't list credit cards among its payment methods for federal student loans. You can pay from a bank account through Auto Pay or a one-time online payment, by debit card over the phone, through your bank's bill pay service or by mailing a check or money order.
If you're thinking about a card for the rewards, look at Auto Pay first. MOHELA says the Auto Pay interest rate reduction increased from 0.25% to 1% on July 1, 2026, as a temporary benefit through June 30, 2028.
How Can You Pay MOHELA?
- Auto Pay: Monthly payments are withdrawn from a bank account you designate, and you can qualify for the interest rate reduction.
- One-time online payment: Log in to your MOHELA account and pay anytime.
- By phone: Use the automated system or speak with a Student Loan Counselor at 1-888-866-4352. If you pay with a debit card, the payment must come from the cardholder named on the card.
- Bank bill pay: Use your account number and MOHELA's payment mailing address.
- Check or money order: Make it payable to MOHELA, include your account number and mail it to the address MOHELA lists. This is the slowest option.
MOHELA says to allow two to four business days for a payment to process and post.
Should You Pay Student Loans With a Credit Card?
Without a direct option, the only possible route is a third-party service that charges your card and sends the payment. That approach usually costs more than it returns.
Possible Benefits
- Rewards: A payment might earn points or cash back if it codes as a purchase.
- Short-term flexibility: A card could cover a payment during a brief cash shortfall.
Costs and Risks
- Service fees: Third-party processing fees often outweigh any rewards.
- Cash advance treatment: Some issuers may treat these payments as cash advances, with fees and immediate interest.
- Higher interest: Card APRs are usually far higher than federal student loan rates.
- Lost flexibility: Federal loans come with options like income-driven repayment, deferment and forbearance. Debt moved to a credit card doesn't.
How Could This Affect Your Credit Score?
- Credit utilization: A large payment on a card raises your balance and your utilization ratio.
- New accounts: Opening a new card for this purpose usually means a hard inquiry.
- Your loan's reporting: MOHELA reports federal loans owned by the Department of Education to the nationwide credit bureaus monthly and begins reporting a loan as delinquent once it's 90 or more days past due.

Better Ways to Pay MOHELA
Enroll in Auto Pay
Auto Pay withdraws your payment from your bank account each month and lowers your interest rate while you stay enrolled. MOHELA says the reduction is now 1% through June 30, 2028, and lists a December 31, 2026 enrollment date, so check MOHELA's announcement for the details. The reduction pauses during deferment or forbearance, and Auto Pay is removed if three consecutive payments are returned for insufficient funds.
Make Extra Payments
Paying more than your monthly amount reduces the interest you'll pay over time. If you use Auto Pay, MOHELA requires you to edit your Auto Pay agreement online to withdraw an additional amount.
Review Your Repayment Plan
MOHELA notes that the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) and Tiered Standard Plan became available on July 1, 2026. The Repayment Calculator on StudentAid.gov can help you compare options.
