Can You Pay USAA Insurance With a Credit Card?
Yes. USAA's insurance billing page says you can pay your auto and property insurance bill with a credit card, debit card, bank account, or check. USAA does not accept cash.
One exception to know: USAA's billing FAQ says Express Pay, its option for paying without logging on, accepts credit and debit cards but not Discover cards.
Should You Pay USAA Insurance With a Credit Card?
Advantages
- Rewards: Insurance premiums are a large, regular expense, so the rewards can add up, especially if you pay in full for the term.
- Welcome bonus progress: A premium payment can help you meet a new card's spending requirement.
- Payment flexibility: You have until your card's due date to pay the balance.
Disadvantages
- Interest: Carrying a large premium on a card at a typical APR can cost far more than you earn in rewards.
- Utilization: A six-month or annual premium can raise your card balance enough to affect your score until you pay it down.
How to Pay USAA Insurance With a Credit Card
- Choose how to pay. USAA lists paying online in your Insurance Bill, through Express Pay without logging on, in the USAA Mobile App, by phone, by mail, or through another bank's online bill pay.
- Add your card. USAA's FAQ says you can add a checking or savings account, or a debit or credit card, from Pay Bills.
- Pick your amount. You can pay the premium in full or pay the minimum amount due each month. Paying more than the minimum lowers your next bill.
- Confirm the payment. Check your Insurance Bill payment history and your card statement to make sure the payment posted.
A spouse on a joint account can also log on, add their own credit card, and make a one-time payment, according to USAA.
Does USAA Charge a Fee to Pay by Credit Card?
USAA says it does not charge any fees when you use Express Pay. Separately, USAA may add an installment fee to your bill depending on how you get and pay it. Its FAQ lists no installment fee for online payments or automatic payments, and says its Automatic Payment Plan (APP) helps you save on installment fees.
Check your statement for a line item titled "Installment Fee" and review USAA's FAQ for the ways to reduce or avoid it.
Does Paying Insurance by Credit Card Affect Your Credit?
- Credit utilization: Amounts owed make up 30% of a FICO® Score according to myFICO, so a large premium on a low-limit card can lower your score temporarily. Paying before your statement closes helps.
- Payment history: Paying your card on time builds positive history, which makes up 35% of a FICO® Score.
- New applications: Paying your premium does not trigger a credit inquiry, but applying for a new card to pay it does.
Your credit can also affect what you pay for coverage in many states. See whether your credit score affects your auto insurance rates.
Other Ways to Pay USAA Insurance
Automatic Payment Plan
With USAA's APP, you choose the account you pay from, your payment date, and whether to pay in full, monthly, or twice a month. You can sign up for alerts that remind you five days before your due date.
Bank Account, Bill Pay, or Check
You can pay from a bank account online or in the app, set up USAA Property & Casualty as a payee in another bank's bill pay, or mail a check to 9800 Fredericksburg Road, San Antonio, TX 78288-0001.
If You Need More Time
USAA says APP members may be able to pause a payment, and some members can carry over or spread out a balance. A late fee may apply.
Which Credit Card Should You Use for USAA Insurance?
Insurance premiums usually earn a card's base rate, so a strong flat-rate card works well. The Citi Double Cash® Card earns 2% cash back on purchases (1% when you buy and 1% as you pay) and has a $0 annual fee.

If you are about to pay a large premium, it may also be a good time to work toward a new card's welcome bonus, as long as you can pay the balance in full. Compare options in the Kudos Explore tool, and let Kudos recommend the best card in your wallet when you pay online.
