Can You Pay WIPS With a Credit Card?
No. WIPS, the Walk-In Payment System, is a way to pay rent in cash at retail stores. The Yardi WIPS FAQ for PayNearMe says agents accept only cash, not checks, money orders, debit cards, or credit cards.
If you want to pay rent with a credit card, you will need a different channel, such as your property's online resident portal, if it accepts cards.
What Is WIPS and How Does It Work?
WIPS lets renters at participating properties pay rent in person at stores in the PayNearMe network, such as Walmart, Kroger, 7-Eleven, CVS, Walgreens, ACE Cash Express, and Casey's General Store. Landlords that use Yardi software and some single-family rental companies, such as Tricon, offer it.
Here is how a payment works:
- Ask your property manager for a WIPS number.
- Print your PaySlip or pull up the mobile barcode sent to your email.
- Go to the customer service desk at a participating store and show the barcode.
- Hand over your rent in cash plus the transaction fee, then keep the receipt as your proof of payment.
The Yardi FAQ lists a $4.99 transaction fee per payment. Payments made before 7 p.m. local time generally post the next morning, but check posting times with your property manager.
What Are the Pros and Cons of Paying Rent With WIPS?
Pros
- You can pay in cash without buying a money order.
- Many locations are open late, so you can pay outside office hours.
Cons
- You pay a fee every time, and you earn no rewards.
- Your receipt is your only proof of payment.
- If you forget the fee, the store deducts it from your payment, which can leave your rent short and possibly late.
- Overpayments become a credit on your ledger, and WIPS cannot issue refunds.
How Can You Pay Rent With a Credit Card Instead?
Many property management portals accept cards for rent, usually with a convenience fee. Log in to your resident portal or ask your leasing office which payment methods it accepts and what each one costs.
If your landlord does not take cards, a third-party bill payment service can charge your card and send the rent by ACH or check, but it adds its own fee. Before you pay a fee to use a card, make sure the rewards you earn are worth more than the fee.

Does Paying Rent With WIPS or a Credit Card Affect Your Credit?
A WIPS cash payment does not involve credit, so it does not affect your credit score on its own. Whether your on-time rent shows up on your credit report depends on whether your landlord or a rent reporting service reports it.
Paying rent with a credit card raises your card balance, which can increase your credit utilization until you pay it off. See our tips to lower your credit card utilization rate.
How Can You Earn More on Everyday Spending?
Even if your rent goes out in cash, the rest of your budget can still earn rewards. Kudos recommends the card in your wallet that earns the most at checkout and shows your card rewards in one place.
