Transferable Points vs. Flat Cash Back: Which Actually Pays You More?
July 1, 2025

Amazon's business cards lost point transferability entirely when they moved to U.S. Bank on August 14, 2026. Points now redeem at a flat 1 cent each — statement credit or Amazon purchase, no partners.
Some cardholders called it a downgrade. Others didn't notice, because they were never transferring anyway. That split is the whole question.
The Case for Transferable Points
Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One miles, and Citi ThankYou Points can move to airline and hotel partners, sometimes at outsized value. Transfer bonuses raise that ceiling further — Chase ran a 70% bonus to IHG One Rewards this month and Citi went to 40% on Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles.
A 70% bonus is not a rounding error. Turning 1,000 points into 1,700 hotel points, redeemed against a room that would have cost real money, is where the "points are worth more than a cent" claim comes from.
The Case Against
Every part of that upside is conditional. You need award availability on your dates. You need to understand a partner program's award chart. You need to transfer only after you've found the award, because transfers are irreversible.
And you need to actually do it. Points sitting in an account for three years while the program devalues are worth less than cash back you took immediately.
Kudos tracks the cash back and rewards you've earned across every card in one place, so you can see what you're actually redeeming and pick the strategy that matches it.
The Honest Comparison
Flat cash back has a floor and no ceiling. A 2% card pays 2% on everything, forever, with no research and no expiration risk. Transferable points have a low floor — usually 1 cent per point toward travel or statement credits — and a high ceiling you only reach with effort.
Redeem thoughtfully a few times a year and points win comfortably. Redeem at 1 cent through a travel portal and you're doing what a cash back card does, with more steps.
A useful test: look at your last three redemptions. If they were all statement credits or portal bookings at roughly a cent per point, a flat-rate cash back card fits your actual behavior better.
The Reasonable Middle
Hold one transferable-currency card for the spending where you'll genuinely chase award value, and one flat-rate cash back card for everything else. Your points balance stays small enough to deploy on a single trip, and your everyday spend earns a guaranteed return instead of piling up a currency you never move.
The devaluation risk cuts one way. Cash back you've already taken cannot be devalued.
