Carnival Rewards Mastercard Review: Earn Cruise Status From Everyday Spending

The first cruise card where everyday spending earns elite status. Worth it?

July 1, 2025

Carnival did something in September that no cruise line had done before: it made everyday credit card spending count toward elite status.

The Carnival Rewards Mastercard launched on September 1, 2026, replacing the Carnival World Mastercard, and it arrived alongside a complete overhaul of Carnival's loyalty program. The old VIFP Club is gone. In its place is Carnival Rewards, built around two separate currencies, and a co-branded card designed to feed both of them. Whether that's good news depends almost entirely on how often you sail with Carnival, and whether you were happy with the old program. A lot of longtime cruisers were not.

Points vs. Stars

This is the part that trips people up, so it's worth getting straight before anything else.

Points are what you redeem. They work like airline miles — you earn them, then spend them on cruise fare, shore excursions, drinks, spa treatments, specialty dining or onboard Wi-Fi. There is no redemption minimum, so you can put a single point toward a booking if you want.

Stars are what determine your status. You cannot spend them. They accumulate toward Carnival's four tiers — Red, Gold, Platinum and Diamond — and they are the reason this card is genuinely different from every other cruise co-brand on the market.

Every dollar you put on the card earns at least one point and one star. That second part has never existed on a cruise card before.

Kudos Tip

Add your cards to Kudos and we will tell you which one earns the most at checkout, including whether your cruise booking is better on a co-brand or a flexible travel card.

What You Earn

6x points on eligible Carnival purchases - 3x from the card, plus 3x for being a Carnival Rewards member. Eligible purchases go beyond the fare: shore excursions, onboard activities, spa treatments and specialty dining all count.

2x points at restaurants and grocery stores, excluding Target and Walmart.

1x point on everything else.

On the status side, you earn 1 star per dollar on every purchase, and up to 4 stars per dollar on Carnival spending once you combine the card with your Carnival Rewards membership.

There is also a 2,500-point anniversary bonus each year you spend $2,000 on the card. And as long as your account is open, your points do not expire. Outside the card, Carnival Rewards points disappear after three years of account inactivity.

The card carries no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees.

More:

What the Points Are Worth

Carnival has not published an official valuation, which is a bit of a tell. But you can back into it from the sample redemptions the company has advertised. An onboard specialty dinner listed at 2,400 points costs about $24 in cash. A frozen cocktail runs 1,357 points. A three-night Bahamas sailing starts around 13,499 points for two, plus taxes and fees. That lands most redemptions at roughly one cent per point, with some spa and photo packages reaching closer to two cents if you are selective.

Run that through the earn rates and the picture gets clearer. 6x on Carnival spending is about 6% back, which is genuinely strong. 2x at restaurants and groceries is about 2% back, which is competitive. And 1x on everything else is about 1% back, which is weak.

That last line matters. A flat 2% cash back card beats this card on all non-bonus spending, and the cash is good anywhere. If you are putting general purchases on the Carnival card, you are accepting a lower return in exchange for stars.

Is Chasing Stars Worth It?

Here is the math nobody puts in the press release.

  • Gold requires 10,000 stars. At one star per dollar, that is $10,000 of card spending — spread across the roughly two-year qualification window, about $5,000 a year. Very achievable, and Gold gets you a complimentary beverage on sailings of five days or more.
  • Platinum requires 50,000 stars. That is $50,000 of card spending if you are not cruising much. The perks are real — preferred dining times, two complimentary beverages, complimentary wash and fold, priority embarkation — but you would be forgoing roughly $500 in value versus a 2% cash back card to get there.
  • Diamond requires 100,000 stars.

The honest read: stars are a good bonus on spending you were doing anyway, and a bad reason to redirect spending you were not. If you cruise Carnival regularly, your fare and onboard spending will do most of the work at up to 4 stars per dollar. If you do not, $50,000 of grocery runs is an expensive way to get a faster dinner reservation.

What Longtime Cruisers Lost

Under the old VIFP program, status was based on days sailed and it was permanent. Under Carnival Rewards, you have two years to earn status and it lasts two years, then you start over. Carnival grandfathered some of it. Cruisers who reached Diamond before the switch keep it for life, and pre-switch Platinums become lifetime Gold.

But going forward, nobody earns lifetime status. That is a meaningful shift, and reaction in cruise communities has been mixed at best. The common complaint is that a first-time cruiser with a big enough credit card bill can now outrank someone with twenty sailings behind them. If you valued the old program specifically because it rewarded years of repeat business, this is a downgrade dressed as an upgrade. It is also worth knowing that casino charges are excluded from qualifying purchases, in case that was your plan.

How It Compares

Cruise co-brands are a small category, and they share a family resemblance: no annual fee, points locked to one cruise line, decent earn rates on the brand and mediocre earn rates everywhere else. Where Carnival now separates itself is the status mechanic. No other cruise card lets card spending move you up a tier. Where it does not separate itself is flexibility. Points earned here are worth roughly a cent, they are only good with Carnival, and they cannot be transferred anywhere.

Who Should Get It

Consider it if you:

  • Sail with Carnival at least once a year
  • Want your everyday spending to count toward status, not just points
  • Are starting from scratch on status rather than protecting a lifetime tier
  • Want a no-annual-fee card that pays a strong return on cruise spending

Skip it if you:

  • Split your cruising across multiple lines
  • Want rewards you can use outside of Carnival
  • Care more about a strong everyday earn rate than cruise-specific perks
  • Were mainly attached to the old lifetime status structure

Flexible Alternatives

A flexible travel card is often the better answer for cruisers who are not loyal to a single brand. You can book any line, the points transfer to airline and hotel partners, and you are not betting on one company's loyalty program surviving unchanged.

The trade-off is an annual fee, and no path to cruise line status.

Bottom Line

The Carnival Rewards Mastercard is a better card than the one it replaced, and that is not a close call. The old Carnival World Mastercard topped out at 2x on Carnival spending and 1x everywhere else. This one pays up to 6x on Carnival, adds a real category bonus on dining and groceries, keeps the $0 annual fee, and throws in a 50,000-point welcome offer worth roughly $500 toward a sailing.

The status mechanic is a genuine first for the cruise industry, and if other lines see it drive spending, expect copycats. But be clear about what you are buying. This is a card that pays well when you are spending on Carnival and poorly when you are not. Use it for cruise fare, onboard extras, dining and groceries, and put the rest of your spending on something that pays more than one cent on the dollar.

If Carnival is your cruise line, it is an easy yes at $0 a year. If it is one of several, the points are a poor place to park your loyalty.
