Does Kafene Report to Credit Bureaus?
Kafene doesn't publicly state that it reports lease payments to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion, and its FAQ says lease-to-own is not a form of credit. That means you shouldn't count on Kafene payments to build your credit.
If credit building matters to you, ask Kafene directly before you sign, and check your credit reports after a few payments.
What Is Kafene?
Kafene is a lease-to-own company that partners with retailers to offer payment plans on items like furniture, appliances, electronics, tires, and wheels. Kafene says its application takes about 60 seconds, with approvals of up to $5,000.
To apply, Kafene says you must be at least 18, have a valid government-issued ID, earn at least $800 a month, and have an active checking account. It approves applicants with poor or no credit by looking at alternative data rather than just credit scores.
Is Kafene a Loan?
No. Kafene says it's not a loan product. You sign a lease agreement, and you can cancel the lease without continuing obligations if you no longer want the item.
Kafene contrasts this with buy now, pay later, which it describes as a form of credit.
How Could Kafene Affect Your Credit?
On-Time Payments
Unless Kafene reports your account to a credit bureau, on-time lease payments won't add positive history to your credit report. Confirm this with Kafene before you rely on it.
Missed Payments
Read your lease agreement for what happens if you fall behind, including any fees and whether an unpaid balance could be sent to collections, which can show up on your credit reports.
Getting Help
Kafene says it offers hardship plans if you have trouble paying, and you can cancel your lease if you can't keep up. Contact Kafene as soon as you think you'll miss a payment.
How Should You Manage a Kafene Lease?
- Know the total cost. Paying over the full term costs more than the early purchase option, so compare the full cost of the lease before you sign.
- Use the early purchase option. Kafene says paying the total within the early purchase period, for example 90 days, gives you the lowest total cost.
- Line up autopay with payday. Kafene says most accounts are set up with automatic payments aligned to when you get paid.
- Pay for free online. Kafene lets you make payments anytime through its online customer dashboard at no charge.
How Can You Build Credit Instead?
If your goal is a stronger credit score, use an account that reports to the credit bureaus, such as a credit card or a credit builder loan, and pay it on time every month. Our guide to building credit without credit cards covers more options.
