TSA Wait Times Spring Break 2026: What Travelers Need to Know

Spring break 2026 TSA delays — what to know before you fly.

Spring break travel is officially underway, and airport security lines are making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

If you have a flight booked in the next few weeks, there are a few things you need to know before you leave for the airport. From record-long TSA lines to a travel insurance gap most people don't see coming, here's what's happening right now and how to protect your trip.

Why TSA Lines Are So Long This Spring Break

This year's spring break travel rush is colliding with an ongoing partial government shutdown — and the combination is causing serious disruption at airports across the country.

TSA officers are considered essential employees, which means they're required to work even without pay. As the shutdown stretches on, more officers are calling out, leaving fewer security lanes open during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Airports like Houston Hobby (HOU), Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (MSY), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL), and Charlotte Douglas (CLT) have all reported wait times reaching two to three hours or more.

At Hobby Airport alone, officials at one point advised travelers to arrive four to five hours early — and some travelers reported lines that backed up through baggage claim and out of the terminal.

The situation may get worse before it gets better. March 14 is both a peak spring break travel day and the date TSA officers are expected to miss their first full paycheck. Industry experts warn that could lead to even more callouts in the days ahead.

How Early Should You Arrive at the Airport Right Now?

Most airports are recommending arriving at least 3 hours early for domestic flights during spring break. At higher-risk airports (particularly those in cities with heavy theme park, beach, or spring break destination traffic), 4 hours is a safer buffer.

Highest-risk airports for spring break 2026:

  • Orlando International (MCO)
  • Houston Hobby (HOU)
  • Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL)
  • New Orleans Louis Armstrong (MSY)
  • Charlotte Douglas (CLT)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Miami (MIA)

If you have TSA PreCheck, it remains operational — so if you've been on the fence about enrolling, now is a great time to fast-track that decision. Note that Global Entry is currently suspended due to the shutdown.

Credit card tip: Many travel cards reimburse the TSA PreCheck enrollment fee ($85) or Global Entry fee ($189) as an annual statement credit, and Global Entry includes PreCheck. Cards that cover this include the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, American Express Platinum Card®, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, Citi Strata Premier® Card, and many airline and hotel co-branded cards. If you haven't used yours yet this year, now is the time.

The Travel Insurance Gap Nobody Talks About, And How Your Credit Card Might Fill It

Here's the part that surprises most travelers: if you miss your flight because of a long TSA line, your standalone travel insurance probably won't cover it.

Standard travel insurance is designed to cover disruptions caused by your airline or "common carrier," things like mechanical failures, weather delays, or flight cancellations. A slow security line, even one caused by a government shutdown, typically falls outside those covered reasons because it's not classified as a carrier-caused disruption.

But your credit card's built-in travel protections may be a different story. Premium travel cards often include trip delay reimbursement, missed connection coverage, and even trip cancellation protection as built-in benefits, and the covered reason definitions can vary from standalone insurance policies. Here's how the top cards stack up:

To activate these benefits, you generally need to have paid for your flight (or at least the taxes and fees) with that card. Always check your card's guide to benefits for full terms — but if you have a premium travel card and haven't looked at this benefit, it's worth a read before your trip.

If you built in extra time and still find yourself at the airport with hours to kill, this is where airport lounge access becomes genuinely useful — not just a luxury perk.

Lounge access means comfortable seating, free food and drinks, reliable Wi-Fi, and a much more manageable experience while you wait. If you're already holding one of these cards, make sure you know how to access lounges at your departure airport before you get there.

5 Things to Do Before Your Spring Break Flight

1. Check your airport's social media the day before you fly. Airports like Hobby and New Orleans have been posting real-time updates on wait times and arrival recommendations directly on X (Twitter) and their websites. A two-minute check the night before can save you hours of stress.

2. Arrive earlier than you think you need to. The standard "two hours early" rule does not apply right now. Build in at least three hours for most airports — four if you're flying out of a high-traffic hub.

3. Use your credit card's TSA PreCheck reimbursement if you haven't yet. PreCheck lines have been significantly shorter than standard lanes during the current disruption. If your card covers the enrollment fee and you haven't used that benefit, this is the moment it pays off.

4. Know what travel protections your card includes. Before you assume your standalone travel insurance has you covered, check your credit card's built-in benefits. Some premium cards include trip delay and missed connection coverage that may apply in situations where a standalone policy falls short.

5. Give yourself a buffer at your destination too. If you're catching a cruise, a resort shuttle, or a connecting flight on the other end, factor in the possibility that your departure could be delayed. Missed connection coverage — whether through your card or a standalone policy — can help offset rebooking costs.

The Bottom Line

Spring break travel 2026 is happening against an unusual backdrop. Long TSA lines are real, they're affecting major airports right now, and they're likely to continue through mid-March. The best thing you can do is plan early, stay informed, and make sure the credit cards in your wallet are actually working for you.

Check your airport's social media the day before you travel. Give yourself extra time. And if you're not sure which of your cards has the best travel protections for a trip like this, it's worth finding out before you're standing in a four-hour line.
