United Premier Status Changes for 2027: PQP Only, Higher 1K Bar

United announced in mid October 2026 that it is ending flight-based status qualification, effective Jan. 1, 2027. The United Premier status changes make Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) the only way to qualify, and they raise the top tier bar noticeably for travelers who relied on flight counts.
Here are the new thresholds, who is hit hardest, and how United cardmembers get a head start.

1. United Premier Status Changes at a Glance
Starting Jan. 1, 2027, you qualify for Premier status with PQPs alone. The flight-based path that let frequent short-haul flyers count Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) goes away.
PlusPoints also move to dynamic pricing on Feb. 1, 2027, so the cost of an upgrade will vary instead of following a fixed chart.

2. New PQP Thresholds by Tier
The PQP thresholds reported for 2027 are:
- Premier Silver: 6,000 PQPs
- Premier Gold: 12,000 PQPs
- Premier Platinum: 18,000 PQPs
- Premier 1K: 32,000 PQPs

3. Why the 1K Jump Hurts Mixed Path Flyers
Premier 1K previously took 28,000 PQPs on the PQP only path, or 22,000 PQPs plus 60 PQFs on the mixed path. At 32,000 PQPs, the mixed path flyer faces about a 45 percent increase in required points. Calculation formulated by Kudos, based on the published 22,000 PQP and 32,000 PQP thresholds.

4. United Cardholder Head Starts
Eligible United cardholders get a starter PQP deposit equal to 5 percent of the PQPs needed for their target tier. That is 300 for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum and 1,600 for 1K. The deposit also applies to people who open an eligible card by Dec. 31, 2026.
